Veronica Lake: Battles with Health Issues and a Difficult Reputation

Veronica Lake initially began acting to battle her early health issues, eventually gaining 38 movie and TV credits.

The Early Years

Veronica Lake was an American film, stage, and television actress, born 14th November 1922 in Brooklyn, New York City. She was the daughter of Constance Charlotta Trimble, and Harry Eugenu Ockelman, who worked for a oil company as a ship employee. Her farther was of half-German and half-Irish descent, and her mother was of Irish ancestry. Veronica’s parents moved to Florida when she was almost one year old. By the time she was five, the family moved back to Brooklyn. Veronica was only twelve years old when her farther died in an explosion on an oil ship. Her mother married one year later to Anthony Keane, who became stepfather to Veronica, but she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. The family moved to Saranac Lake which was where Veronica held such fond memories, enjoying the outdoor life such as swimming, boating, and skating.

Two years later Veronica graduated from high school. She had been previously diagnosed as a classic schizophrenic and her parents saw acting as a form of treatment for her condition. Veronica had natural beauty and charm. This is what prompted her mother and stepfather to move to Beverly Hills, California, where she enrolled in the well-known Bliss Hayden school for Acting in Hollywood. Victoria showed remarkable ability, and did not have to wait long for movies to come her way, staring in such films as All Women Have Secrets, Every Other Inch a Lady, and Sullivan’s Travels.

A Complex Personality

Veronica Lake was married four times and had four children. Her┬ácareer began to decline in the late 1940’s, in part due to her alcoholism. Although popular with the public, she had a complex personality which acquired her the reputation for being difficult to work with. She began to drink more heavily, and a growing number of people refused to work with her. In later years, after her third divorce, Veronica drifted between cheap hotels in New York City, and was arrested several times for public drunkenness.

Veronica Lake was a beautiful actress who starred with Alan Ladd at least seven times. Her life was short, but she packed so much into it. Veronica died aged fifty on the 7th July 1973 in Burlington, Vermont, from a combination of acute hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, and acute kidney injury.
